Here’s some simple wisdom.

Always Prepared

4 Jun

(like a girl scout)

I carry a big purse. With lots of things in it. Most useful, some not. But I think a girl [lady, like Jackie O] should always be prepared. Having a few small things on hand can make big changes in a day; like when you cry with no waterproof mascara on- better to get rid of the evidence than walk around scaring folks; or when you want to put your hair up because it’s sweltering outside.

I like to be the person that always says “I do!” when someone asks “Does anyone have ________?”.

Here’s a list of what you’ll always find in my puse [unless I'm slacking]:

 1. Chapstick- there’s nothing worse than the feeling of dry lips. It’s consuming.

2. Lotion- See #1

3. Mints

4. Eye makeup remover packs- because the smeared mascara and eyeliner look isn’t so sexy

5. Toner packs- for a clean feeling face

6. Nail File (this is a big one)

7. Deoderant.

8. Hair tie- Usually can’t find one of these

9. A bobby pin or two.

10. Nail polish remover packs

11. Nail polish- in case you have time for a spontaneous manicure

12. Excedrin.

13. Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing sheets- It’s summer, they soak up sweat too.

14. Sunglasses

Am I missing any? What don’t you leave the house without?

ZTA All The Way. Really.

5 Mar

My sorority, Zeta Tau Alpa, recently won the 2010 Sprite Step-Off Challenge.  A bunch of white girls from Arkansas put together a 9-minute, Matrix themed step routine and won their way to the top. There is much controversy associated with their win since stepping is traditionally a hallmark of  African-American fraternities and sororities. Related or not, Sprite recently announced “scoring discrepancies” and changed the standings to two first-place winners, ZTA and AKA with each sorority winning $100,000 in scholarships. I’m not going to pretend I know the first thing about stepping but these girls are good! Just watch below.  A full article may be found on the Washington Post site.

Almost Famous

30 Oct

This is who I wanted to be for Halloween:

edie

But nobody knows who she was. So, if you’re boycotting Halloween this weekend, get to know her; Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol’s muse [or one of them rather]. Watch Factory Girl. It is one of my all-time favorite movies. I didn’t even know I had all time favorite movies until I wrote that sentence. Watch her and fall in love.

Also, I forgot to share these gems with you. Lower your volume before watching. Believe me.

Convicted

7 Aug

You do it, I do it.

We allow conviction-less statements out. We speak in such a manner that waters down what we are trying to say. Say what you mean, mean what you say.

I spotted this video a while ago, on Matthew’s blog I think and have been thinking about it ever since. This week, it randomly found me. I thought I’d share it with you.

Let’s change the way we talk, people!

This week, the Friday Favorite goes to John Piper’s Desiring God Blog Post: I Wrote a Poem to Put My Heart Right. It reminded me to rejoice, because my name is written in Heaven! What a simple concept that is too often easily forgotten!

My mom is on her way up for primo Tony’s college graduation! Yay!

Ha, side note: My sister told me that when my mom read the blog post I wrote about her, she cried. When she was done crying after a few minutes, she said to my sister “your sister has too much time on her hands.” That’s my family for you. Gotta love ‘em.

 Have a great weekend all.

It’s Friday and it’s dreadful outside and the weekend forecast doesn’t seem to promise any better. With that, I went in search of a little sunshine myself. Two relatively useless things I love are Quotable Cards and Storypeople. So, I leave you this Friday with some favorites of those. AND! The Friday Favorite this week goes to Heather’s #9 Post.

BFF Jaime got me this one in a mug… I drink my coffee out of it every day.

This last one is my all-time, favorite Quotable Card. BFF Nadia gave it to me for a birthday a few years back and somehow, I haven’t lost it!700114d

Chels and I did art projects one day to these two. The bottom one is hanging in my bathroom. Chels gave hers to her momma. spp0036spp0022

Caribbean Green

24 Jul

That’s my color.

A while ago, I blogged about meeting author Rick Smith on an airplane. He told me about his book The Leap (which I’ve since read) and the Primary Colors Assesment Test that was to go with it.  Well, I took the test earlier this week and I must say, it’s pretty right-on about me. Here’s some of what Caribbean Green means:

Your primary color is characterized by an excellent balance between leadership and execution. You also have an affinity for the creative activities also found in the Red color spectrum. However, while you like to involve yourself in the creative process you tend to be more people oriented and outward facing – often desiring to lead or play a significant role in a team environment. It is typical for people in this part of the color spectrum to be hands-on in their management approach but comfortable in delegating responsibilities to others. You are an excellent listener, and incorporate others suggestions.

I wouldn’t call myself an excellent listener but, I’ve been working on it.

So, what’s your color? What will the test say about you? Take it and find out and tell me about it!

I haven’t done Friday favorite in like a month. Way to be consistent Jovanna! This week’s goes to Dr.Matthew Robinson for the I Do post on his blog. That video definitely made my morning better!

26 Jun

It’s Friday. Hooray!

The favorite this week goes to Missis Ashley because……

ta-holdyourbreath-daaaa! Her kitchen is finished and it is amazing and you need to see it!

So, check it. See it. Love it. And tell Missis Ashley what a great job she and Mister Tony did.

And totally a unkitcheny ps – I am very much loving this quote [and John Piper himself]:

“Boasting is the voice of pride in the heart of the strong. Self-pity is the voice of pride in the heart of the weak.”

Friday Favorite

19 Jun

A four day week and still, Friday could not have come sooner. My favorite blog post this week was a short one by Dean called Tension.

He posted this quote on there: I feel like I am too worldly for the Church and too religious for the World.

I feel like that very often- like a state of limbo. I rarely know which side of the line I’m dancing on. Actually, I rarely know where the line lies.

I helped lead The Well’s college girls community group (you all were awesome) on Wednesday and we discussed what that quote looks like. I wish I had a neat little package to summarize it for you but truth is, it was over an hour’s worth of awesome discussion (sorry boys!).

And Matt, don’t worry, the meal was awesome.

On a different note…

My boss was on CNBC’s Closing Bell again yesterday. What a rock star! Watch his debate on Obama’s plan for regulatory overhaul. Anyone have an opinion on this?
